Re-Boot Wishes and Champagne Dreams

Some give re-boots a bad rap; saying that producing something that has already been done lacks creativity or originality.  In my opinion, if it was good enough to do once, why not try it again!  Of course I’m not proposing we do this for every single sci-fi TV show or movie.  Only certain ones that may have not gotten their due or never saw their full potential realized.

Battlestar Galactica is a great example of this!  When it first aired in the 1970’s it was good, but never quite lived up to what it could of become.  Luckily it had a second chance two and a half decades later when it was re-imagined for Syfy.

There’s already a number of television and film properties who’s rights have been acquired for re-making, or are already in development.  For example, Blake’s 7, Highlander, Space 1999 and Logan’s Run.  But, here’s a list of shows that I think deserve a second chance and why.  Who knows, maybe some Hollywood producer will stumble upon this blog and take these into consideration.

Sure, this first aired as an animated show, but with today’s modern computer graphics technology I’m sure it wouldn’t take too much to convert it to live action.  The story follows what happens after an alien starship crash lands on Earth, giving the human race technology to fight three successive extraterrestrial invasions.  The success of Pacific Rim really shows that the world is ready for this story to be re-told!

Ark II

You say you’ve never heard of this show?  Well, that’s not a surprise considering it only aired for about a half a season, Saturday mornings in 1976.  Ark II was aimed at kids and was about a team of humans in the 25th century traveling around in a futuristic RV trying to reclaim a world decimated by waste, pollution and warfare.  Think The Walking Dead but a lot farther into the future.  I’d like to see this re-done in a much darker, more adult tone!

At first I wasn’t even going to include this show, because everybody and their mother wants to see it brought back!  But then I thought, why not put a whole new set of characters together and place them somewhere else in the Firefly universe.  This would be a lot more doable considering most of the original actors are off on their own working on other projects.  It can be like we experienced with Star Trek and Stargate with their spin-off shows.  The world of Firefly is rich with characters and stories that are prime for exploration.  And who knows, we might just bump into Captain Mal!

Here are a few other re-make honorable mentions.

Space: Above and Beyond – another show that went way before it’s time!

Alien Nation – if they can have an android buddy cop show with Almost Human, why not bring back this old favorite!

Sliders – C’mon, alternate universes!! Who doesn’t want to see more of that?

Like I said already, hopefully an up and coming TV writer or producer will find this blog and use it for inspiration to bring back some of these classic TV shows.  Anything is possible right?
