SDCC: “LUMBERJANES” TAKE COMIC-CON TO THE MAX, ANNOUNCE NEW ONE-SHOT
During a lively hour with fans Saturday at Comic-Con International in San Diego, members of the creative team of the Eisner Award-winning series “Lumberjanes” announced a one-shot special for October: “Lumberjanes: Beyond Bay Leaf.” Written by Faith Erin Hicks with art from newcomer Rosemary Valero-O’Connell, the one-shot features a new character named “Seafarin’ Karen.” Series co-writer Shannon Watters said a test page of the character done by O’Connell made her eyes “turn to hearts.”
The one-shot represents an ongoing expansion of the title’s creative team. With co-creator/writer Noelle Stevenson taking a step back from day-to-day planning and writing of the series, Watters will be joined by Kat Leyh for the upcoming issue #18. “It’s cool that it started with us,” Stevenson said during the panel. “But [the book] can go so many places. These woods are infinite. There’s so many people — people I don’t know exist yet — who could bring so much to it.” She’s excited to see what “Lumberjanes” will look like after her departure and specifically added she “can’t wait” to see what Leyh’s voice brings to the book.
SINGER HINTS AT CLASSIC, COLORFUL X-MEN COSTUMES IN “APOCALYPSE”
The goodwill earned by “X-Men: Apocalypse’s” well-received — although not yet released — sizzle reel screen during Comic-Con International in San Diego should keep on growing, thanks to a new interview with director Bryan Singer over at Yahoo!. While Singer didn’t give anything away, he did tease something that mutant fans have been waiting for ever since Cyclops dissed “yellow spandex” in 2000’s “X-Men — actual superhero costumes.
“I will say that in ‘X-Men: Apocalypse,’ there is a chance — without giving anything away — that you may get closer to seeing what I think, Mr. X-Men News, you are interested in seeing,” said Singer after being asked about the team’s “Apocalypse” look. “I know it’s something I’ve been interested in, I just always wanted to do it the right way”
Marvel pays tribute to classic hip-hop in amazing new variant covers
Marvel can’t leave rap alone; the fans need it. In addition to rebooting its entire slate of comics after the end of Secret Wars this fall, the House of Ideas now plans on releasing a collection of hip-hop-inspired variant covers that riff on some of the greatest rap albums of the last 30 years.
“For years, Marvel Comics and hip-hop culture have been engaged in an ongoing dialogue,” said Marvel Editor-in-Chief Axel Alonso in a forthcoming release. “Beginning this October, we will shine a spotlight on the seamless relationship between those two unique forces.” Indeed, Marvel has already featured hip-hop artists prominently in its pages, most recently with the Run the Jewels variant covers it released for Howard the Duck and Deadpool. Eminem even teamed up with the Punisher back in 2009.
